Liquid waste removal and disposal
Narangba is home to a state-of-the-art facility that allows us to manage hard-to-recycle waste. Here, Plascon and indirect thermal desorption (ITD) technologies are used to treat waste such as PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances), hydrocarbons and other hazardous liquids.
The site offers hazardous liquid waste processing to waste companies, utilities, the defence sector, councils, EPA, universities, and industrial sectors in Brisbane and Queensland. Our Narangba site safely handles your liquid waste according to strict Health, Safety, and Environment standards.
We are the leaders in automated densification of high volume small packaged waste, household paint tins, to maximise recycling and create an alternate fuel (HazPak), recovering mercury from fluorescent tubes (Balcan), vacuum distillation of perchloroethylene (PERC) to create a reusable dry cleaning fluid (C-Vap) and treatment of a variety of persistent organic pollutants and other intractable wastes (PLASCON® and base catalyst dechlorination – BCD) to name a few.
Our innovative treatment capabilities are recognised by government regulators and the broader waste industry as best practise, providing customers with peace of mind that their most difficult waste streams and residues have been lawfully and sustainably dealt with.
Key features
Our innovative waste treatment solutions at Narangba are underpinned by exceptional equipment and processing technologies:
- Our equipment is the best applicable technology and the manufacturer must be reputable, having high safety and quality values
- Our treatment process enables sustainable environmental outcomes in consideration of the waste hierarchy
- A high level of automation in the process to reduce workplace health and safety risks
- Treatment costs are commensurate with the risk and beneficial outcomes, and offer our customers value for money
The Narangba site houses exclusive destruction technologies designed to treat hard to deal with waste. One asset is the Plascon machine which uses a high energy plasma torch that molecularly destroys hazardous substances at high temperatures. The Plascon’s advantages include superior waste mixing, higher temperatures, high energy efficiency, lower system thermal inertia and follows a compact process.
Another key feature of the Narangba facility is its capacity to treat PFAS (Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) in water, soil and foam.
PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that are resistant to heat, water and oil. PFAS are used in different industrial applications and products like fire-fighting foams, aviation hydraulic fluids, and cookware manufacturing. PFAS-contaminated liquids used in these applications must be treated to avoid reaching long distances in the environment and killing land and marine life.
Apart from PLASCON®, other treatment methods include thermal oxidation, thermal desorption, PFAS optimised physio chemical water treatment and chemical immobilisation and solidification.
How we do it
Narangba’s Chemical Immobilisation and Solidification (CIS) technology has been recognised as a world leading technology for the immobilisation of both organic and inorganic contaminants. The CIS technology has been researched, developed and verified over a number of years in Australia and other countries. The effectiveness of the technology has been verified by the CRC for Waste Management and Pollution Control (UNSW), the University of Nevada USA, and the Materials Institute of Western Australia.
Our CIS Technology meets regulatory acceptance and received many immobilisation and treatment approvals for its use. These approvals include waste materials containing organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), cyanides and phenols, and metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium.
PLASCON® technology
The PLASCON® process is a compact plasma torch developed by CSIRO and further refined as a state-of-the-art hazardous waste treatment process for persistent organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyl’s (PCB’S). PLASCON® utilises pyrolysis in an inert environment, which is achieved through a patented plasma arc process.
A mixture of waste liquid and oxygen is injected radially into the plasma with an average mixing temperature at the injection manifold exceeding 3000°C destroying the molecules, converting them into atoms and ions. Contaminants are eliminated with a destruction efficiency in excess of 99.9999%, which exceeds the most stringent standards set by government agencies around the world.
The collected liquid waste is decanted into the indirect thermal desorption (ITD) trays, heating the liquids at 350 degrees Celsius. This process eliminates certain chemicals, and the liquids are then desorbed and treated through the PLASCON®. Inside the Plasma arc torch completely destroys harmful substances. The salty water by-product is then disposed or further treated.
