Norman Marsh – better known as Norm – takes care of spare parts and equipment for the Sydney municipal business in NSW Solids. Thanks to the great deal of experience he has in all types of maintenance, Norm is often called upon in those sticky situations for his opinion and knowledge on where to source something or how to repair it, not only by his team but others across the state. He is a reliable, valued and respected team member who is best known for letting you know if he thinks you are doing something wrong.
Norm started with Cleanaway in 1980 as a driver operating a J6 Bedford side loader in Islington, Newcastle. The truck’s lifter was operated by a single cylinder and wire cables and involved manual labour to help push the bins up to empty them. Norm says, “I remember the interview and climbing into the old truck with a crash box and doing the vehicle assessment, thinking ‘what am I getting myself into?'” Once he had settled in, Norm found himself at home and continued his career as a driver operating a vast array of vehicles, including an old 1960s Foden Marrell, an F86 Volvo vacuum tanker, a Volvo front lift, a Mack roll on/roll off bale truck and an Iveco Acco vacuum tanker.
Cleanaway won the contract for the North Ryde transfer station and Norm moved locations to become part of the night shift maintenance team. He continued on to Seven Hills and Auburn transfer stations in the same role, then moved to the Municipal workshop in 2007 as a leading hand to look after the vehicle maintenance.
Norm says, “I have seen so many changes over the years, especially when it comes to technology and safety. Once upon a time I used to pump out tanks standing inside wearing rubber boots and not much PPE. I have worked with some great people along the way and have enjoyed working at Cleanaway.”
