Cleanaway today officially opened the Perth Material Recovery Facility (Perth MRF) to grow recycling capacity in Western Australia (WA).
Following the catastrophic fire in November 2019, the $26 million redeveloped facility located in South Guildford reinstates essential resource recovery capability in WA.
“Our local workforce has a great sense of pride about the facility. The fire was devastating and while our first priority was the safety of our team and we have worked tirelessly to restore Perth’s recyclables processing market capacity to the pre-fire level,” said Brad Gornall, Cleanaway’s General Manager for Western Australia & Northern Territory.
“Today we have officially reinstated the capacity for local governments throughout metropolitan and regional areas along with other customers to manage the recycling and recovery for households and commercial operators.
“We believe we have a long-term role to play in WA, ensuring recyclables processing capacity can continue to grow into the future which is aligned to Cleanaway’s Footprint 2025 roadmap. Furthermore we are also supporting the State Government to realise the objectives and targets outlined in the 2030 Waste Strategy” he said.

Cleanaway worked with an externally appointed independent fire engineer, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, to ensure the redevelopment met the highest standards for safety, sustainability and fire and operations management.
A range of fire safety enhancements have been incorporated in the Perth MRF rebuild that go beyond what the National Construction Code requires.
The Perth MRF will process 200,000 tons of recyclables a year and is designed to address Perth’s recycling needs for years to come.
Throughout the redevelopment Cleanaway engaged with and gave a voice to the local community through the established Perth MRF Community Reference Group (CRG) to share information about the redevelopment process with community members who represent the interests of the wider community. The CRG is made up of residents from the local community, City of Swan representative, the local State Member, Cleanaway representatives and an independent facilitator.
Cleanaway also established a community hotline and project website to share information about the redevelopment process and engage with community members.
