What does a state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility look like?
On 28 May 2021, Cleanaway reopened the Perth Material Recovery Facility (Perth MRF) located in South Guildford that reinstated essential resource recovery capability in WA.
The $26 million facility has the capacity to process over half of commingled recycling from residents and customers across Western Australia delivering up to 90% recovery of reusable products.
The modern design features and technology including optical sorting and various screening configuration to deliver a quality output of up to 99.5% purity across all fibre and plastic outputs.
By maximising the resources that can be sold on and delivering high levels of purity in recycling commodities, the MRF will improve costs for municipal and business customers and reduce landfill.
Cleanaway worked with an externally appointed independent fire engineer, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, to ensure the redevelopment met the highest standards for safety, sustainability and fire and operations management.
A range of fire safety enhancements have been incorporated in the Perth MRF rebuild that go beyond what the National Construction Code requires.
The Perth MRF will process 200,000 tonnes of recyclables a year and is designed to address Perth’s recycling needs for years to come.
