Mobile phone and TV recycling
E-waste is growing up to three times faster than general waste in Australia. Mobile phones and TVs are two of the biggest electronic devices contributing heavily to this statistic. For every five million mobile phones purchased in Australia each year, there are about 23 million more stored and unused.
Our mobile phone and TV recycling services help create a closed loop by making sure up to 90% of materials used to make these electronic devices can be turned into new products. This reduces the need to extract more materials from the earth, which helps save energy, conserve natural resources and protect our environment. Recycling just 10,000 mobile phones avoids the need to mine 26 tonnes of gold ore.
National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS)
Established in 2011, the NTCRS provides Australian households with access to collection and recycling services for their unwanted electronic waste, with NTCRS e-waste recycling drop-off points all over the country. Under this scheme, safe disposal of household e-waste ensures that:
- valuable resources contained within these devices can be safely recovered and made
into new products - the amount of waste and hazardous components found in e-waste going to landfill can be reduced
Computer parts and printer cartridge recycling
More than 18 million printer cartridges amounting to 5,000 tonnes of waste are discarded in Australia each year. Unwanted computers and office technology do not belong in landfill. In fact, some Australian states such as Victoria, have introduced legislation to stop e-waste from being disposed of incorrectly and potentially harming our environment. Materials like lead, mercury and carcinogens contained in electronic devices can pollute the air, land and waterways, bringing harm to humans and the environment.
What happens to your e-waste?
E-waste can be dropped off at selected recycling centres, transfer stations and drop-off sites like Officeworks stores. Devices are then taken to EPA-approved recycling facilities where they are taken apart and their components recycled.
