Open spaces such as parks, schools, playgrounds pose a high risk for infections to spread due to their accessibility and potential for high traffic.

Cleanaway has launched a safe and effective decontamination service for public spaces and facilities, removing infectious elements without affecting paint, surfaces and the underlying structure.

Together with Hammelmann Australia and Enviromist, we have developed fogging nozzle technology to ensure the best application of product which is less aggressive than conventional methods and ensures no damage to people, property or assets.

Our decontamination service is informed by consultation with expert chemists and occupational hygienists to provide assurance of compliance, effectiveness and quality.

What is decontamination?

Decontamination refers to a process that cleans, disinfects, and sanitises an object, space or material to remove possible viruses, bacteria and other infectious elements.

Open spaces such as parks, schools, playgrounds may be sites of viral transmission due to their accessibility and potential for high traffic. Regular cleaning and decontamination of handrails, chairs, doorframes and other commonly touched surfaces can stop harmful diseases from spreading.

Cleanaway’s misting decontamination technology

Cleanaway’s misting decontamination technology

Cleanaway’s misting decontamination technology has many advantages over spraying methods commonly used. Our misting technology:

  • kills more than 99.99% of harmful microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and spores
  • has a longer contact time with potential virus-infected material
  • is non-corrosive and suitable for all types of hard surfaces including bricks, concrete, ceramic, glass, aluminium, chrome-plated/stainless steel and painted surfaces
  • has greater travel distance of up to 50m for active chemicals
  • produces less product wastage
  • minimises environmental risk as product doesn’t travel into drains and waterways

Our decontamination service is available for public spaces such as schools, parks, shopfronts, roads, bus stops, loading docks, terminals, carparks and includes resource and manufacturing plants.

As an experienced emergency response provider, we have supported our local communities through some of the biggest environmental challenges in recent years, such as 2019’s bushfires, floods, and other large-scale mobilisation of industrial waste and cleaning services.

We also offer safe treatment, collection and disposal of all kinds of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in accordance with relevant regulations and an emergency response service for urgent requests.

Cleanaway are proud to be delivering an end-to-end waste management service to City of Port Adelaide Enfield (a Cleanaway customer for over 30 years), City of Marion, City of Adelaide and City of Charles Sturt. Servicing over 160,000 residents, this is the largest municipal contract ever awarded in SA.

To support the contract, Cleanaway will invest in around 30 new staff and over 40 fleet assets featuring Cleanaway’s award-winning Cleanaview, putting the councils in the driver’s seat with in-cabin data and services management technology.

General Manager Solid Waste Services Conan Hookings said, “We’ll be using new technologies to offer the highest level of service to residents and councils. Our brand-new collection fleet will be equipped with the Cleanaview fleet management system which provides real-time data on collection services, enabling an online portal for residents to make requests and queries.”

Under the comprehensive waste services contract, Cleanaway will be providing kerbside waste, recycling and organics collections out of our Port Adelaide and Lonsdale depots while residual waste will be processed at Wingfield Resource Recovery Facility and Inkerman Landfill. The seven plus three years contract also includes bulk bin, hard waste and street litter collection and processing.

Our service will be supported by additional education resources to help residents put the right materials in the right bin to reduce contamination and improve recycling outcomes.

Marion Mayor Kris Hanna in welcoming the contract said, “This demonstrates what can be achieved when councils work together. About 43,000 households will benefit in Marion from a greener, more efficient kerbside collection service that increases the focus on our community.”

Electric collections vehicles are also set to be trialed in selected council areas. These zero emissions trucks were rolled out in VIC and WA as early as last year, reducing carbon footprint and noise levels on the road without impacting service levels.

The new kerbside collection service will begin in Marion and Port Adelaide Enfield on 1 May 2020, followed by Adelaide City Council in 1 July 2020. Services in Charles Sturt will be rolled out in 1 May 2021.

"The commercial and private sectors have welcomed Cleanaway's entry into Tasmania as an alternative waste management provider, as evidenced by our growing business and team"

This February marked one year of our operations in Tasmania. After initially entering the market with a four-man team offering front lift and rear lift services, we introduced a hook lift service six months later, which allowed us to extend our skip bin service to residential and commercial customers.

Regional Manager Matt Eiszele launched the service, with Ops Supervisor James Durkin and drivers Shane Butler and Matthew Styles. “From four team members and four trucks, we have since grown to a team of 23 dedicated staff and seven trucks across four sites, servicing businesses and residents throughout the state.” Matt said.

“The fleet has now expanded which includes a spare front lift truck, a new hook lift truck in Hobart and one more operating out of Launceston.”

Matt and the team are proud of how Cleanaway’s offering has been welcomed by the commercial and private sector. “The business is growing at a steady rate and we’ve won a number of significant accounts, which allows us to offer even more services to smaller businesses.” Matt explained. “We’re also providing front lift services for the Central Coast Council across the north west coast of Tasmania.”

The acquisition of SKM in November 2019 added the Derwent Park Material Recovery Facility and 15 new team members to the Cleanaway family. The site was reopened following safety and quality upgrades to ensure a safe and compliant workplace.

“We also moved our southern operations from its previous temporary location to a permanent standalone site in Glenorchy, which is closer to central services and enables us to serve our customers better.” said Matt.

“Local control over our supply chain significantly advances our ability to deliver an even more agile and quality service to our customers.” General Manager Health Services Caleb Mcguire

Starting this month, all Cleanaway Daniels’ reusable sharps collectors and related spare parts will be 100% Australian-made. The complete onshoring of manufacturing capabilities represents the single largest investment made by Cleanaway Daniels last year and an important step forward towards Cleanaway’s Footprint 2025 roadmap to help communities manage their waste and improve resource recovery infrastructure in Australia.

General Manager, Health Services Caleb Mcguire in announcing the milestone said, “Local control over our supply chain significantly advances our ability to deliver an even more agile and quality service to our customers. By reshoring operations closer to end users, we have a leaner supply chain that’s better suited for rapid production, more flexibility to meet changes in customer demand while supporting and driving the local economy.”

“A predictable supply chain also allows us to optimise inventory levels as there is less geographical uncertainty to account for when unforeseen disruptions happen.”

“This project was led by National Sourcing & Supply Chain Manager, Health Services Jonathan Salib, who with his team, exceeded all expectations for this phase of our vision for complete independence of the future direction of our product range.” said Caleb, congratulating the team for completing the project.

Altogether, Cleanaway Daniels invested in 40 new blow, injection and rotor moulding tools. The brand-new tooling includes a spare set of key tools which reduce production costs and downtime in the event of maintenance or repair.

In describing the effort put in by the team, Jonathan said, “This process has not been an easy one, and the supply chain team are to be commended on their efforts and support throughout this process. It has involved countless hours, late nights, long phone calls and a number of complexities that needed to be resolved.”

“The most significant challenge for the team was the size of the project along with the integration of the ASP business into Cleanaway. This meant a lot of moving parts requiring attention including upgrading our site, new machinery, new tools and developing new skillsets.” said Jonathan.

“Currently, Cleanaway Daniels uses a combination of existing domestic suppliers as well as the St Mary’s facility in NSW to manufacture new sharps containers. Over time, Cleanaway Daniels will migrate the bulk of its manufacturing to St Mary’s.”

On March 2019, Cleanaway completed the acquisition of ASP Healthcare (ASP) which included the plastic manufacturing facility at St Mary’s. ASP is an Australian-owned business that has serviced the healthcare industry for over 20 years with a range of premium products that include sharp collectors, a range of needles and syringes, disinfection chemicals, sharp disposal bins and more.

ASP’s in-house capability to pelletise and manufacture sharps collectors presents an exciting opportunity for Cleanaway to increase the use of recycled material in our operations.

An important part of the rehabilitation process is the extraction, collection, treatment and disposal of water that has come into contact with waste, called leachate.

Cleanaway currently manages and oversees the rehabilitation and post closure works of landfills in Carroll Road, Clayton, Deals Road, Fraser Road, Ryans Road and Victory Road. Post Closure Specialist Srikar Rapole gives an insight into what it takes to rehabilitate landfills that have reached full capacity.

By Srikar Rapole

Highly engineered landfill sites at Fraser Road, Deals Road, Carroll Road and Victory Road were licenced to accept household and commercial residual waste, construction and demolition waste and other treated waste types but have since reached capacity.

This is when the rehabilitation and post closure phase kicks in to ensure the land is restored, protected and returned to the community in optimum condition. An important part of the rehabilitation process is the extraction, collection, treatment and disposal of water that has come into contact with waste, called leachate.

Leachate in the landfills and storage ponds is isolated from the natural ground using engineered layers that prevent contact with the groundwater and natural habitat. Leachate is collected at the base of the landfill and pumped from wells into a system of pipelines that transfer the leachate to storage ponds, all according to strict regulatory requirements. Aerators in the storage ponds help treat the leachate to the required quality for disposal.

As part of the ongoing rehabilitation of these sites, some of the existing infrastructure is also being upgraded to ensure optimal performance. Pond 5 has recently been rectified including:

  • removal of sediment and build up in the bottom of the pond
  • removal and replacement of unsuitable soils from the subgrade layer of the pond
  • installation of new geomembrane liner on the base and walls of the pond including gas system
  • installation of new perimeter fencing and lifesaving equipment
  • procurement of new aerators designed to effectively treat the leachate in Pond 5 while being more energy efficient.

Pictured: The largest pond midway through the rectification process

Before:

After:

Here are a few interesting facts about our Fraser Road ponds:

  • Altogether the ponds have a holding capacity of over 60ML – that’s over twenty Olympic sized swimming pools!
  • The largest dam can hold over 44 million schooners
  • Over a year we will be aiming to treat up to 100ML of leachate water – it would take an average household over 500 years to go through this amount of water

Cleanaway’s engineering and stakeholder engagement team continue to work closely with the local community, council and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to provide long term benefits from landfill sites and minimise any impact on the community and environment.

“We are working hard to restore the trust in recycling and while we are still optimising our operations to process all the recycling received at the facilities, we are proud of how far the facilities have come in such a short time.” CEO and Managing Director Vik Bansal

Updated: February 2021

Around-the-clock efforts to clear waste stockpiles and rehabilitate Victoria’s waste processing facilities have restored recycling services to the state in record time. Facilities in Coolaroo, Hallam, Geelong and the Laverton North Material Recovery Facility (MRF) are now fully operational following the successful acquisition of SKM Recycling Group’s assets.

The network of facilities, now known as Victoria Commingled Resource Recovery (VCRR), were acquired by Cleanaway in October 2019 from the SKM Recycling Group, whose closure in July 2019 greatly affected the reputation of recycling in Victoria. Councils and households who trusted that their recycling efforts were being managed correctly were understandably disappointed when recycling had to be sent to landfill.

Cleanaway CEO and Managing Director Vik Bansal welcomed the new facilities to the Cleanaway family, “Our teams worked tirelessly to bring these facilities back to the required environmental and operational standards in an extremely short period of time without compromise to safety or quality. It was not acceptable to us that after years of conscientiously sorting their recyclables, Victorians be told that their recycling must be put on hold for an extended period.”

“We are working closely with our council customers to restore the trust in recycling, while we continue to optimise our operations to support a sustainable recycling business.” said Vik.

Pictured: Sorting recyclables at Laverton North MRF

The sites were overworked and lacking in maintenance for a significant period, requiring weeks of operational and logistical clean up efforts. Stockpiled waste was removed from sites, machinery and conveyor belts were replaced and optical sorting systems were recalibrated.

In line with our compliance standards, all sites have had extensive works undertaken to fire control and stormwater systems.

Pictured: Bales of recycling ready to be sent for further processing

The major challenge continuing to face kerbside recycling is contamination from items such as textiles, e-waste, batteries and machinery, soft plastic, used nappies, pots and pans, and organic material.

Approximately 20-23% of non-recyclable material is received at our VRR MRFs from commingled recycling collections.

Contamination is particularly problematic because it can destroy good quality recycling and damage machinery in facilities. It’s estimated that an additional 10% of recyclable material is lost due to contamination in processing.

“Moving forward, we are working with residents and council customers to minimise contamination and improve the quality of recyclables collected. To further incentivise recycling, our new contract with Geelong Region Alliance (G21) includes a discount for councils with low levels of contamination and a commitment to work with councils to find viable local solutions for recyclables.” said Vik.

Cleanaway will be supporting councils with a range of educational material to help manage any uncertainty over bin inclusions including flyers, videos and social media. Residents who are unclear about recycling rules should refer to their council for the latest advice.

Over the last eight years, we’ve worked with Fresenius Kidney Care to divert over 21 tonnes of plastic from landfill and incineration by using reusable plastics instead of single-use plastics.
Previously, the biggest challenges for Fresenius was the incidence of needlestick injuries when disposing of sharps, and the manual handling and transportation of clinical waste.

With Sharpsmart and Clinismart reusable containers, safety, productivity and sustainability improved at Fresenius. Clinismart enabled teams to conduct up to seven dialysis sessions before needing to swap out containers and they were turning over approximately four times the number of single-use plastic sharps containers when compared to Sharpsmart.

Quality & Infection Prevention & Control Manager for Fresenius Kidney Care Carolyn Chenoweth said, “Working in healthcare and trying to ensure effective infection prevention and control often means a lot of clinical waste is generated. Using the Clinismart and Sharpsmart containers meant we could improve our infection prevention and control, and work health and safety, with the added benefit of being environmentally sustainable.”

The Cleanaway Daniels team

The Cleanaway Daniels team also conducted regular onsite training tailored to each site’s physical space and local requirements.

Cleanaway Daniels Key Account Manager Christopher Nicoalides said, “We offer each site an in-service training, which gives the Fresenius team members the opportunity to understand the safety, and environmental benefits involved around the implementation of our solutions. This in-service also assists each site to better manage all of their waste management solutions through our “sort it out” training. “

“With the current environmental challenges that we face across the world, eliminating single use plastics has such a positive impact upon our environment, especially when you consider that we have years of data that promote the positive impact that Fresenius Kidney Care have made.

Fresenius also switched from hard plastic five litre bottles to soft plastic bags to reduce the weight of plastics involved in their dialysis treatments. They are also working closely together with Deakin University to turn discarded plastic dialysis waste into more durable concrete.

In recognition of their efforts, Fresenius was recently awarded a Certificate of Sustainability by Cleanaway Daniels.

Highlights

When left unattended, grease traps can be filled with solids, and fats, oils and grease (FOG). Clogging, unpleasant odours, and water draining slowly are signs that your grease trap needs maintenance.

As a commercial kitchen operator, you have a crucial obligation to keep your grease trap functional and well maintained. Here’s our checklist to help keep your grease trap working in tip-top condition all year round.

  1. Know your grease trap installation and servicing obligations

Requirements and standards may differ between states and water authorities, so refer to your local regulations for advice on the kind of grease trap you can use, where to place it and how to maintain it. Ensure that your waste services provider is licensed to manage and treat your grease trap waste.

  1. Make sure that your grease trap is installed properly

A properly installed grease trap will have a properly fitted lid that will prevent spillage and odours from coming out. It will also prevent pests and other unwanted materials from entering and blocking the grease trap.

  1. Avoid pouring used oils and food waste into the sink

While the function of a grease trap is to separate grease and food solids, carelessly disposing your waste down the sink will fill and clog your trap at a much faster rate. Remember that having a grease trap does not turn your sink into a rubbish disposal unit.

  1. Install strainers in your kitchen sinks

Strainers prevent some of the grease and food solids from going down the sink. As an added benefit, food solids can be collected and reused for compost.

  1. Know the signs of a blocked trap

When you start seeing water remaining in the sink or flowing down the drain too slowly, it is usually a sign that your grease trap needs to be cleaned. Water in a clean, unclogged sink flows quickly and effortlessly down the drain. A build-up of grease over time leads to foul smelling odours in the sink area. This gets worse the more clogged your grease trap gets.

  1. Refrain from DIY cleaning

Leave grease trap cleaning to the professionals. Do not use any type of solvents or enzymes that dissolve grease or oils. These methods may break down the waste but could also cause other problems such as corroded and damaged pipes. They also expose the sewage system to potentially hazardous materials.

  1. Consult a grease trap maintenance provider and set up a scheduled service

Contact a waste management expert to assess, collect and process your grease trap waste. Based on different factors such as your type of business and volume of waste, your provider will set up a maintenance plan that prioritises efficiency for your kitchen. Emergency pump out services can cost four times more than a scheduled service, not including the clean up cost and the fine.
