When chemicals spilled across a road after a vehicle rolled over in Port Douglas in Far North Queensland in August, Douglas Shire Council knew who to call: Cleanaway Leading Hand Damien Orwin.
He took over the problem, sourcing a safety data sheet on the chemicals and working with fire services to contain the spill and safely manage the clean-up.
It was for actions like this that Damien was awarded Cleanaway’s 2021 STAR Award for Customer Service Excellence.
The award capped a successful year for the man who, for 15 years, has led a small team at Cleanaway’s Port Douglas depot, which also achieved 5,000 days of working injury-free.
Cleanaway has received many written compliments from customers for Damien’s willingness to go the extra mile and help out.

Damien was recently presented with his award by Douglas Shire Council CEO Juanita Warner at an informal lunch, in front of family, colleagues and Council waste management team members.
“I was really humbled to even have been nominated but I couldn’t have achieved this without the support of the wonderful team in Port Douglas,” Damien says.
Employees are nominated for STAR Awards by their peers and the winners of the 11 awards are selected by a review panel made up of managers and senior executives.
