Complete biosolids waste management and consultation
Biosolids are a by-product of the sewage treatment process. This material has a high nutrient value and is rich in organic matter. When used as a soil conditioner, biosolids can help improve soil chemical and physical properties, which will then enhance plant growth.
What do biosolids look like?Â
Biosolids vary depending on the treatment process and the moisture content. Dewatered biosolids typically range from 20% to 80% moisture. At 80% moisture biosolids resemble wet manure. As the moisture content drops, the biosolids begin to resemble soil. Liquid biosolids usually have a solids content of less than 10% and have the appearance of dark, organic liquid.
How are biosolids applied to land?Â
The physical properties of the biosolids will determine the appropriate land application method used. Liquid biosolids are injected below the surface of the soil using specialised equipment. Dewatered biosolids are temporarily stockpiled at the application site before being applied to the surface of the soil, using specialised spreading equipment, and then ploughed below the soil surface.
Biosolids application rates are calculated to meet crop nutrient requirements. Due to their organic nature, nutrients are released slowly, and application rates are much higher than for conventional fertilisers. Application rates will depend on the nutrient requirements of the crop and the moisture content of the biosolids. Rates typically range from 50 to 100 wet tonnes per hectare.
What are the benefits of biosolids?Â
Biosolids can be applied to the land as a soil amendment or a substitute for conventional fertilisers. The application of biosolids can benefit soil through the addition of organic matter and nutrients, which improve soil fertility and the quality and structure of soil. Biosolids also contain micronutrients such as copper, zinc and iron, which can further reduce the need for additional fertilisers.
