Contaminated sludges
Cleanaway offers a complete service for contaminated sludges, including sewage sludge. Sludge usually consists of mainly water with lesser amounts of solid material removed from liquid waste.
Contaminated sludge may be a by-product in various industries, such as food and beverage, and consists of wastewater and sewage, containing pathogens and trace amounts of dangerous metals and chemicals.
However, when sludge contaminants are removed, the resulting resource can be treated and reused as biosolids and as a beneficial soil conditioner. The liquids may be turned into greywater, allowing you to reuse the water on your premises if possible.
Contaminated sludge treatment and disposal
Contaminated sludge, such as sewage sludge, can be treated in several ways, depending on the sludge contaminants within. Most treatments begin with reducing the water content in the sludge, which results in two products: a dewatered sludge and a liquid castoff. The sludge may then be treated to recover resources such as phosphorus. Â
The contaminated sludge may then be put through a digestion phase, where it may be used to generate energy or turned into compost and biosolids for non-agriculture purposes. Contaminated sludge that cannot be treated will be incinerated. Â
