Our purpose

Driven by purpose. Focused on creating a more sustainable Australia.

At the heart of everything we do

At Cleanaway, our purpose is to make a sustainable future possible together.

The guiding compass for all our decisions, our purpose drives our commitment to help Australia transition to a circular economy and reduce our impact on the natural environment. It’s embedded into our unique responsibility to safely manage the nation’s waste, while supporting Australians to live more sustainably through practical guidance and education.

As the nation’s leading waste management provider, we believe that waste is not just something to be managed – it is a resource to be recovered, reused and reimagined. That’s why we proudly deliver on our purpose through essential at-scale waste and resource recovery solutions that provide benefits for people and the environment.

Why our purpose matters for Australia’s future

Our purpose shapes the way we work with our customers, communities, governments and industries to enable better sustainability outcomes.

This is important now more than ever, as rising waste volumes and low recovery rates present a clear challenge, both globally and at home. UN Environment Programme (UNEP) predicts that global municipal solid waste will rise by about two-thirds by 2050. At the same time, plastic consumption in Australia continues to be high while recovery rates remain low.

At Cleanaway, we believe the solution is to step away from a linear economy – which employs a ‘take-make-dispose’ model – and move towards a circular economy that uses recycled material to make new products, reducing reliance on precious, finite resources.

Our Sustainability Framework

Our approach to sustainability is guided by our Sustainability Framework, which sets out how we intend to deliver on our purpose. Refreshed in FY24, the Framework focuses on where we can achieve the greatest material and positive outcomes for the environment, our people and the communities we serve.

Our Framework is built around our four pillars, which align with our material focus areas. The pillars focus on our impact, progress and achievement, and hold us accountable for achieving meaningful outcomes.

Blueprint 2030: Our strategy in action

Blueprint 2030 is our customer-led strategy, launched in 2022 as our long-term roadmap for sustainable growth and impact. At the heart is our goal to be recognised by our customers as the leading innovative and sustainable waste management provider, with industry-leading health, safety and environmental (HSE) performance.

Our strategy aims to deliver on the needs of all our stakeholders while staying true to our purpose by providing high-circularity, low-carbon solutions, alongside seamless customer service and value for money.

Delivering for customers and the community

Through our Sustainability Framework and Blueprint 2030 strategy, we deliver practical benefits for our customers and communities. For our customers, this means expert and compliant services and strategies that reduce waste, improve recycling and support their sustainability targets. Our award-winning education programs also help customers - such as councils, schools and businesses – to reduce contamination and lower waste-to-landfill rates, creating valuable flow-on effects that benefit the communities they serve.

At a community level, we play an active role through local sponsorships and donations, strategic social procurement and impactful partnerships that build community-led change.

These actions help bring our purpose to life, as we work in partnership with stakeholders to improve sustainability outcomes across Australia.
